Important Medicare Dates

Medicare Enrollment Dates, in Plain Words.

Medicare has different enrollment periods for different situations. Knowing which window applies to you can help you avoid delays, missed opportunities and possible late-enrollment penalties.

Special Enrollment Periods (SEP)

You may have an opportunity to enroll or change coverage outside the regular annual periods when certain life events happen. Examples can include moving, losing employer or other coverage, gaining or losing Medicaid, or qualifying for Extra Help. The timing and changes allowed depend on the specific event.

This is especially important for Medicare + Medicaid clients. Some people with Medicaid or Extra Help have additional opportunities to change coverage. If your Medicaid status changes, do not assume you have to wait until fall—let's check your eligibility first.

General Enrollment Period for Part A and/or Part B

If you missed your first opportunity to sign up for Part A and/or Part B and do not qualify for a Special Enrollment Period, the General Enrollment Period runs January 1–March 31. Coverage generally starts the month after you enroll, and a late-enrollment penalty may apply in some situations.

Why I want clients to review coverage every year

Plan premiums, copays, drug formularies, provider networks and extra benefits can change from year to year. Even if you like your current plan, it is worth checking the next year's details before deciding to stay.

Not sure which enrollment period applies to you? That is exactly the kind of question I can help you sort out. Call or text me before making a change.
